Dr. Jeremy Alm (Mathematics Department) called meeting to order at approximately 3:03pm
Brief history of the 2018-2019 QEP Process (see attached “QEP Brief History” handout)
Decision to focus QEP on math pathways, specifically the non-algebraic pathway for non-STEM students, which will now include MATH 1332 (Contemporary Math) and MATH 1342 (Statistics).
The goals for the new QEP have not been finalized, but two of them are:
- Improving the non-algebraic math pathways – moving away from paper and pencil stats class in favor of Excel based class and addition of contemporary math to make math more applicable to the 21st century
- Move non-STEM students out of college algebra into the non-algebraic pathway. This means many departments will need to change their degree plans.
Timeline
Fall 2019—begin/continue development of QEP
Late February 2020—QEP proposal due
7-9 April 202—SACS site visit
A Q+A discussion of various points, including:
- Site visit (and how to market to/inform students about the QEP). Will site visitors ask students they encounter on campus if they know about the QEP? No definitive answer for this question.
- Explanation of sub committees (Assessment, Budget, Marketing, Messaging, Advising, Lit Review)
- No prerequisites for either 1332 or 1342 (co-requisites would still apply if student is TSI)
- Both MATH 1332 and 1342 are Core Curriculum approved
- Discussion of how advisors in UAC and in departments will be trained to present these new options to students. We need to consider these changes as changes in 海角社区 culture-university community used to having algebra as the main math course.
- Transfer students either Core complete or with a different math course completed will take either MATH 1332 or MATH 1342.
Meeting adjourned at approximately 3:45pm.
