Requirements for Teacher Certification in Texas

For details concerning requirements for teacher certification and information on professional education courses, consult the section of the catalog. All students must satisfy provisions of the Texas Success Initiative program (see section 6.1.22 in the catalog). Developmental courses do not count in the GPA (except for determining full-time status and issues related to probation and suspension) and do not count toward graduation.

Local Chapter of National Art Education Association

The art education program is structured to provide students with the knowledge needed to pursue a career of excellence as an all-levels art teacher in elementary and secondary schools. Students engage in creative involvement with local schools as well as state and national organizations. The Lamar student chapter of the National Art Education Association is very active, traveling to meetings and exhibitions as well as sponsoring on campus workshops with nationally known artists.

Learn All Areas of Studio Art and Art History

Art education majors are well grounded in all areas of studio art and art history and gain additional experience in teaching art through three art methods courses, ARTS 3381, ARTS 4371, and ARTS 4381. Art education students also volunteer to help with local art programs for children and assist in workshops for other art students and local teachers. As a result, our graduates have a strong record of employment.

Art education students are committed to participating in a program of public exhibitions at Texas galleries and museums. Their NAEA chapter also sponsors trips to attend meetings of the Texas Art Education Association as well as visits to museums, galleries, and artists' studios.

Types of Degrees

The art education program serves both students seeking a Bachelor of Science degree leading to all-levels certification as well as studio majors and post-baccalaureate students seeking certification along with their studio art studies in the Bachelor of Fine Arts degree program.
