Department of Theatre and Dance presents The Book Club Play

The LU Department of Theatre and Dance is pleased to announce their first production of the semester, The Book Club Play, written by Karen Zacarias and directed by LU student Ashley Galan. The Book Club Play will take the stage on September 30 through October 3, with showtime beginning at 7:30 p.m. and the Sunday matinee at 2 p.m. All performances will be held in the University Theatre.

Loads of laughter and literature collide in this smart hit comedy about books and the people who love them. Ana is a Type A personality who lives in a letter-perfect world with an adoring husband, the perfect job and her greatest passion: Book Club. But when her cherished group becomes the focus of a documentary film, their intimate discussions about life and literature take a turn for the hilarious in front of the inescapable camera lens. Add a provocative new member along with some surprising new book titles, and these six friends are bound for pandemonium.

“Working on The Book Club Play has been a wonderful experience. Being part of the process of developing the characters and their relationships, deepening their layers, and observing how they come to life has been gratifying and enlightening. I hope the audience is able to see themselves and their friends in the characters of The Book Club Play as they experience the complexity of a friend group of diverse personalities,” said Galan.

Sprinkled with fun theatrical references to documentaries and novels galore from Moby Dick and Age of Innocence to Twilight and The Da Vinci Code, this buoyant comedy on contemporary culture will have everyone laughing … and reflecting. The Book Club Play is a delightful play about life, love, literature and the side-splitting results when friends start reading between the lines.

“Working on The Book Club Play has been a very exciting bonding experience! One of my favorite aspects about working on shows is the amazing friendships and comradery that are created. The Book Club Play is the type of show that you can simply sit back and enjoy, and I hope that the audience allows themselves to laugh and take a moment away from the outside world. Everyone working on this play is incredibly talented, and I am just happy to be a part of this experience,” said Taylor Bell, costume designer and student actor who plays the role of Lily.

Tickets range in price from $7-$15 and are available through lamar.edu/lutdtix.
