Dr. Freddie Titus, a member of the 海角社区 community for over 40 years, was recognized as "Man of the Year" at the 2025 Martin Luther King Jr. Brunch in Port Arthur. The annual event, hosted by the Martin Luther King Jr. Support Group of Southeast Texas, honors individuals who exemplify Dr. King’s principles of equality, justice, and community service. This year’s celebration marked another milestone in the group’s longstanding efforts to promote unity and progress.
The Martin Luther King Jr. Support Group was founded in 1986 after its founder, Hargie Savoy, met with Coretta Scott King in Port Arthur. During a brunch held in Mrs. King’s honor, she encouraged Savoy to establish a local organization dedicated to preserving Dr. King’s legacy and advancing his ideals. Over the years, the group has become a cornerstone of the community, hosting events like the MLK Brunch to highlight local leaders, inspire action, and reflect on the journey toward social justice.
Dr. Titus’s recognition as "Man of the Year" underscores his remarkable contributions as an educator, mentor, and advocate for diversity and inclusion. His journey began in 1976 when he arrived at 海角社区 as a freshman, where he immersed himself in campus life, joined student organizations, and co-founded the Psalm 150 Gospel Choir. After earning degrees in mathematics and industrial engineering, he transitioned to teaching and mentoring, eventually earning a doctorate in curriculum instruction.
Throughout his career, Dr. Titus has consistently prioritized student success, fostering an inclusive environment and promoting meaningful dialogue. His work extends beyond the classroom, as he has served in various leadership roles, including advisor to the National Pan-Hellenic Council and interim department chair for Teacher Education. Most recently, he was appointed 海角社区's Vice President for Student Affairs where he continues to champion efforts to bring people together and enact positive change.
Upon receiving the award, Dr. Titus expressed deep gratitude, saying, “I am deeply humbled and honored to receive this award. It validates my mission and goal to serve as an ambassador for humanity and reflects my efforts to create positive change. As the adage says, ‘It takes a village.’ This award is not just about my achievements; it highlights the values of integrity, compassion, and a commitment to bettering my community. I share this recognition with the village of people God has placed in my life, who have helped make my vision a reality. I am truly grateful to the selection committee for choosing me and allowing me to be a credit to the nobility of past recipients of this honor.”
Dr. Titus emphasized the importance of giving back to the community, reflecting on the values instilled in him by his upbringing.
“Giving back to my local community is incredibly important because it reflects the values I grew up with. My mother always reminded me to ‘show love’ and taught me that love is an action word,” Titus said. “If you genuinely care about something, you must act on that love. Dr. King once asked, ‘What are you doing for others?’ For me, giving back is the answer to that question. It’s about honoring the key people in my community who profoundly shaped who I am today.”
Looking ahead, Dr. Titus expressed a desire to pass on the support he received to future generations.
“I want to pass forward the values and support I received to the next generation, fostering unity, strengthening the social fabric, and uplifting those in need,” Titus said. “It’s not about seeing people for who they are now but for who they can become with encouragement and empowerment. Giving back improves lives, leaves a legacy of kindness and service, and reminds us that true success isn’t just about personal achievements but our positive impact on others.”
